Don't Help
First produced in 2020, “Don’t Help” captures the comfort of solitude that the artist felt during the Covid lockdown. David employs the imagery of a lone figure trapped on a deserted island as an acknowledgement that his mature style conjures an association with comics such as The New Yorker or The Far Side. This new version of “Don’t Help” enhances the initial sentiment by extending the ocean and sky with sweeping gestures of acrylic and spray paint. The island itself incorporates sand for added texture and realism. “Don’t Help” has become a signature piece for the artist and this 2025 painting showcases the fullest expression of the concept.
No Worries
“No Worries” sees the artist revisiting the island setting five years later. This time, however, David admits that he is asking for help (albeit still not directly). Where “Don’t Help” is a picture of peace and relaxation, the seascape in “No Worries” is balmy and uneasy. This sense of urgency in the environment heightens the comedy of writing a long-winded plea in the sand. Fellow people-pleasers will understand the burden of feeling like a burden; therefore this excessive politeness makes total sense. If you relate to this please consider purchasing a print of this painting — no worries if not!
